Google honors the birth of ‘Pac-Man’; share your memories

Image
Interested in playing Pac-Man , in honor of the classic arcade game’s 30th anniversary? Just head over to Google . Readers who go to the main Google search page will notice the logo has been replaced with a game of Pac-Man . Just hit “Insert Coin” and gobble away. “PAC-MAN seems like a natural fit for the Google homepage,” reads a post on the official Google blog . “They’re both deceptively straightforward, carefully hiding their complexity under the hood. There’s a light-hearted, human touch to both of them. And we can only hope you find using Google at least a quarter as enjoyable as eating dots and chasing ghosts.” Pac-Man debuted in the arcades in 1980, and can be found on pretty much every platform imaginable. Google’s Pacman Doodle – Reverse Engineering 101

Google’s homepage today (May 21, 2010) has a Pacman doodle – and the interesting thing is: its playable! And is Google’s first ever playable doodle ! Being a geek, I decided to have a look at the source code to find out how Google had done it. I didn’t reverse-engineer the entire code; I just wanted to get a general idea of how they had done it … it seems to me that Google, after all, has extremely concise and efficient code to solve a lot of their problems. So, first of all they have a element that contains the playable area: view source print ? 01 < div id = lga > 02    < a href = "/search?q=PAC-MAN+30th+Anniversary&ct=pacman10-hp&oi=ddle" id = "dlink" > 03    a > 04    < div id = logo style = "width:554px;height:186px;background:black url(logos/pacman10-hp.png) 0 0 no-repeat;position:relative;margin-bottom:9px" title = "PAC-MAN's 30th Birthday! Pac Man In Doodle

Image
Today on 30 th anniversary of popular video game Pacman, Google salutes this great entertainer,  and to make the celebration of anniversary huge a doodler Ryan Germick  has integrated this classic game in a new doodle. Anyone can play it and recall his childhood memories by visiting Google.com . Click on insert coin and whoa game begins. This doodle is available for one day only. Ryan has included PAC-MAN’s original game logic, graphics and sounds, ghosts’ individual personalities, and even recreated original bugs from this 1980’s masterpiece. If you throw in another coin, Ms. PAC-MAN joins the party and you can play together with someone else (PAC-MAN is controlled with arrow keys or by clicking on the maze, Ms. PAC-MAN using the WASD keys). Pac Man was released in Japan on May 22 1980. The game was developed primarily by a young Namco employee Toru Iwatani, over a year, beginning in April 1979, employing a nine-man team. The original title was pronounced p...

Celebrating PAC-MAN’s 30th birthday

Image
When I was growing up, my dad had the best job I could possibly imagine: he was an arcade game and pinball technician. For me, that meant summer trips through Poland’s coastal cities with their seasonal arcade parlors; peeking inside cabinets to learn programming and engineering secrets; and—of course—free games! One of my favorites was PAC-MAN , whose popularity transcended the geopolitical barriers of that time. During the heyday of space shooters, Tōru Iwatani ’s creation stood out as one of the first video games aimed at a broader audience, with a cute story of pizza-shaped character gobbling dots in a maze, colorful (literally!) characters, friendly design, very little violence and everlasting fun. Today, on PAC-MAN’s 30th birthday, you can rediscover some of your 8-bit memories—or meet PAC-MAN for the first time—through our first-ever playable Google doodle. To play the game, go to google.com during the next 48 hours (because it’s too cool to keep for just ...

Pac-Man is 30 Celebrate along with… Google

Image
Pac-Man is 30! Celebrate along with… Google? Visiting Google’s  homepage today will get you a fun surprise: a full, playable version of  Pac-Man above the search bar. The logo is the center of the maze and the game recreates the sights and sounds of the game while leaving the smell of cheap pot and regret behind. How I miss arcades. You can  read the gritty details on the official Google blog, but you’ll be forgiven for simply playing. Authenticity was important. “Google doodler Ryan Germick and I made sure to include PAC-MAN’s original game logic, graphics and sounds, bring back ghosts’ individual personalities, and even recreate original bugs from this 1980’s masterpiece,” Marcin Wichary, senior UX designer and developer wrote. If you put in another virtual coin, Ms. Pac-Man joins the fun for co-op play. Use the arrow keys for Pac-Man, WASD for his wife, and you’re having a good time. Check out the rest of the story here…

Google Throws Down The Gauntlet!!!

“If we did not act, we faced a draconian future. Where one man, one company, one carrier was the future.” — Google Awww shit!! Google’s about to get all types of real up in this bitch! Yesterday the company wrapped up it’s I/O conference in San Francisco, and basically drew a line in the sand daring Apple to cross it. During the keynote, which took an early stab at Apple’s groundbreaking “1984″ commercial with the image above, they announced Android’s future (which includes Flash! ), a new partnership with OnStar , and a little fireball of win called Google TV. I’m gonna go ahead and call it: Apple is shitting themselves right now! If Google’s BadAssness over the past two days isn’t enough for you, they’ve given you the perfect productivity killer: Pac-Man! Today’s lesson in hip-hop, which is technically yesterday’s lesson since this post is late, is brought to you by Money Making Jam Boys. The group is Black Thought (from The Roots), Dice Raw, Truck North, P.O.R....

Happy birthday, PAC-MAN!

Image
Totally rad! To celebrate the 30th birthday of the ’80s arcade masterpiece, Google’s outdone themselves today and posted their first-ever playable Google logo. Those who thought the logo was cute this morning may not have realized that you can actually play the game on the Google homepage using the arrows on your keyboard. Try it! From the Official Google Blog : PAC-MAN seems like a natural fit for the Google homepage. They’re both deceptively straightforward, carefully hiding their complexity under the hood. There’s a light-hearted, human touch to both of them. And we can only hope you find using Google at least a quarter as enjoyable as eating dots and chasing ghosts. You know, without actually needing any quarters.
